![]() ![]() It really tracks perfectly, as it should. ![]() I don't need to use a mousepad with this mouse, but I always use a WowPad because they make any mouse work better. It's also extremely responsive and tracks on darn near anything. The tracking uses the newer BlueTrack system rather than the Red-light system most of my mice use. I suspect if I opened it up I'd find a small lead weight inside to give it just a smidge of heft. While the nano receiver has a home inside the base of the mouse for storage, it's unfortunate that there isn't an option for using Bluetooth as I need another nano receiver like I need a hole in the head. There's a nano receiver and batteries are included. You open the box by pulling the lid all the way off and releasing the mouse from it's stand. Inside the lid is directions on how to use the primary gestures. There's even a little magnet to hold the lid down. The package opens up with a multi-fold lid like a treasure chest to expose the mouse beneath a clear cover. It's really nice to see Microsoft getting packaging right in a way that isn't a copy of Apple's packaging. The packaging and OOBE (Out of Box Experience) is cherry. Take a mouse that works like you'd think a mouse should, then add a number of multi-touch gestures so your mouse is everything a mouse is PLUS basic gestures you use with a touchpad or phone. I REALLY want to like the Microsoft Touch Mouse. Sometimes it just makes you happy to refresh the stuff you use every day. Getting a new mouse or a new keyboard is a great inexpensive way to fundamentally change your computing experience. I've tried dozens of keyboards and mice, and many webcams. I don't have any vested interest in this mouse and I paid for it myself. That said, I don't know anyone in hardware. I work for Microsoft on the Web Platform team. It’s free but the developer does have a PayPal donation link so if you find the app useful then pass along a donation of thanks.First, a disclaimer. You’ll notice that the window above says “One Finger Middle Axis Click.” It looks like they are trying to emulate a middle mouse button with this option but I was unable to get it to operate in Color like a middle mouse button traditionally works.īut overall MagicPrefs makes the Apple Magic Mouse a bit more functional. MagicPrefs has a tab for Swipes as well but as of this writing there’s no functionality for swipes but that shows where the developer is going with this. To me this shows that there’s even more potential for the touch surface of the Magic Mouse. ![]() There’s also the abilty to save your own presets and to adjust the tracking speed and tap sensitivity. To open the preferences for MagicPrefs just click the little mouse icon that it adds to your menubar: You can set these things to several different commands: ![]() The app works by mapping one, two, three and four finger clicks and taps to new functions. Two of the most used functions on my old Mighty Mouse was the middle-click for revealing the desktop and the side squeeze for revealing all windows via Expos©. I immediately saw that it added a functionality that I greatly missed: Expos©. MagicPrefs is a “free menubar application for OSX which aims to improve the functionality and configuration options of the Apple Magic Mouse.” It’s not a system preference pane but rather a little application that runs in the background. There’s now a little 3rd party application called MagicPrefs that adds even more functionality to the mouse. A few weeks ago I wrote a review of the new Apple Magic Mouse and using it with Final Cut Studio. ![]()
